Dreaming of summer!
It’s that time of year when we all begin to dream of summer vacation. Depending on where you live, most of us are looking forward to sunshine, warm temperatures, and new destinations. Here in southwestern Colorado the snow piles are still huge which will provide some welcome green come summer. But right now they are daunting! We’ve had a bumper crop of snowfall this winter – and it’s still coming.
Anyway, let’s dream about upcoming plans and events. If you will be joining us here in Mancos, please allow yourself time to visit our local creative district. Most folks travel to this area with a few destinations in mind but often miss out on our quaint and beautiful downtown. In spite of a small population of around 1500 residents, Mancos supports the largest creative district in Colorado. It spans several blocks in the historic downtown area and is home to galleries, artisan cooperatives, an historic opera house, a restored common press, late 1800’s buildings, and is home to a vibrant community of more than 150 artists.
When you’re planning your itinerary, be sure to allow yourself a full day to peruse the eight galleries where you will find authentic native American art and crafts, western memorabilia, and the spectacular works created by local artisans. Mesa Verde, of course, is open year-round but there are periodic closures for snowplowing during the winter months.
Another bit of information – Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum is closed February 19th through mid-May for renovations. In an upcoming blog I will provide more information about this valuable resource for those interested in learning more about the Ancestral Puebloans.
